You are not alone in this
Guidance for coping with the loss of a pet, and for supporting children through it too.
Coping with grief
Grief is expressed in many ways, so there's no set path you have to follow. It's important to allow yourself time — you should never feel guilty, ashamed or embarrassed about being upset. Grief is a natural process, often moving through denial, anger, sadness and, eventually, acceptance. Loneliness and guilt are common too.
Most importantly, remember you're not alone. Your vet, friends and family will be there to support you, and there's no need to be too proud to seek professional advice — ask your vet or one of our team if they can recommend a local pet bereavement counsellor or support group.
When it affects the whole family
For many children, losing a pet is their first experience of bereavement, and it can be deeply affecting. Try to allow them to talk about their feelings and answer their questions as honestly as their age allows — simple, clear words like "died" are usually easier for a young child to understand than phrases like "put to sleep".
Some children find it helps to draw a picture of their pet, write a poem, or put together a memory box of photos and toys, celebrating their pet's life rather than focusing only on the loss. If your pet is unwell and unlikely to recover, talking to your child in advance can give them time to prepare, ask questions, and say their own goodbye.
Whichever choices you make — a home burial with a grave marker or remembrance tree, or scattering ashes somewhere meaningful — try to include your child's wishes too, and keep space open for them to keep talking about their pet and the good memories you shared.
